Spidey Come Home and D23 Announcements

I’m not going to do headers this week because it’s all Marvel news. I’ve been away for health reasons so for the next few weeks I won’t be talking about other projects that our favorite actors are up to. When things calm down  again that part of the blog will return.

It was emotional for Spider-Man fans this week when it was revealed by various sources that Sony and Disney could not reach a deal when it came to Spider-Man continuing in the MCU. The Homecoming was short-lived and Tom Holland’s Spidey is out of the MCU for the time being. Fingers crossed that Sony and Disney can get their crap together and that everyone’s favorite web-slinger can stay home where he belongs.

Sony’s statement on the ordeal reads as follows:

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” Sony said in a statement. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” the statement continued. “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Tom Holland had this to say about Spider-Man’s future:

‘All I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man … The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler’

Kevin Feige on Sony’s Spider-Man decision:

“It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”

D23 is well underway and a bunch of cool Marvel stuff was announced:

Three new Disney + shows were announced including:

Ms. Marvel which will be written and produced by Bisha K. Ali. (Source: The Hollywood Reporter)

Kevin Feige says that she will also appear in movies.

Moon Knight:

Black Panther 2 will be released in theaters on May 6, 2022.

Some new members of the Eternals cast were announced:

Gemma Chan will play Cersei.

Kit Harrington will play Dane Whitman AKA Black Knight.

Barry Keoghan will play Druig.

Some new cast members for WandaVision were announced:

Kathryn Hahn will play a “nosy neighbor.”

Randall Park will return as his Ant-Man and the Wasp character Jimmy Woo.

Kat Dennings is returning as her Thor character Darcy Lewis.

The show is being described as part classic sitcom (Yay! My favorite kind!) and part epic MCU adventure.

Falcon and Winter Soldier:

Wyatt Russell will be playing US Agent.

Emily VanCamp will return as Sharon Carter.

What If?

There will be one episode for each of the 23 movies that are currently out.

Almost the entire MCU cast will be lending their voices to the project.

Concepts for episodes include:

Steve Rogers in a suit the size of Iron Monger.

T’Challa as Star Lord.

Zombie Captain America.

Loki:

Kate Herron will be directing the series.

Questions to be answered:

Will the sun shine on Loki again?

Will Loki make a new friend? (Please be Verity Willis!)

Where did he go with the Tesseract?

The season seven trailer for Agents of Shield was released:

Contrary to recent reports, Taika Waititi HASN’T finished the Thor: Love and Thunder script. He tweeted saying that the title page is complete. You gotta start somewhere!

Avengers: Endgame will be available to stream on Disney + on December 11.

In an interview with uproxx, Martin Freeman said the last he heard Black Panther 2 will begin filming at the beginning of 2021.

DiscussingFilm reported that Matt is in talks to direct a six episode Marvel series for Disney+. There is no info on what series it could be.

That’s all for this week. Thanks f or reading!

Daniel Bruhl will be reprising his role as Baron Zemo. Some footage was shown. Here’s a description of that footage from the guys over at TotalFilm:

“It begins with the code words that active Winter Soldier, and Baron Zemo sits into frame wearing a coat, looking ragged with a beard. He says he’s hijacked the panel, says, “Gentlemen, I’ll be seeing you very soon,” and then puts on the purple mask that the classic version of the character wears and the video goes haywire.”

Black Widow

*************

1. Some footage was shown during the panel. Here’s a description of that footage once again from TotalFilm:

“Glimpses of Natasha’s past come flooding in the teaser, flashing through the her assassin academy memories from Avengers: Age of Ultron. “I made a family,” Natasha opines, as the footage leads into her turn in Captain America: Civil War, when she made a decision to let Captain America escape instead of capturing him. “They’re coming for you,” Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) warns, as she flees…setting the stage for Black Widow, which seemingly takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

In Budapest, Natasha cautiously makes her way up an old, turn-of-the-century apartment building with a lavish staircase but weathered walls. Entering an apartment she points her gun and calls for Yelena, saying, “We’re grown-ups here.” Florence Pugh’s Yelena appears from around the corner, pointing her gun. They stand mere inches apart, guns in each other’s faces for several seconds before they both disarm each other, the camera showing their graceful parallel movements — obviously students of the same school. The grimy, tactile fight is reminiscent of the Bournefilms, especially in its low light and intense close-ups. Finding their usual tactics too well-matched, their fight gets nasty and brutal, with Natasha pushing Yelena’s head down a sink and Yelena breaking a plate over Natasha’s head, and eventually resorting to knives. They find themselves at several impasses, until both of them have placed each other in chokeholds with the apartment’s curtains. After a cut to black, they’re shown having drinks.

“It’s good to see you too,” Natasha says, handing Yelena a shot glass.

The teaser leads into several car chases, with Natasha weaving in and out of Eastern European streets. We get quick shots of solemn, Brutalist imagery and foreboding silhouettes.”I got rid of my ledger,” Natasha declares, though it seems like she hasn’t completely been rid of her past. The teaser closes out with Natasha getting pinned behind a flaming car on a bridge, with hooded man attacking her in the middle of the street. The hooded uniform and its sleek design with red lining resembles that of Taskmaster, a Marvel villain that has recently been rumored to appear in Black Widow. But who is under the suit?”

2. It’s directed by Cate Shortland.

3. The cast includes:

Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian.

Florence Pugh as Yelena, “A sister figure to Natasha.”

O.T. Fagbenle as Mason, “an old contact of Natasha’s before she worked with SHIELD, and a potential love interest.”

Rachel Weisz as Melina, “a pretty tough chick,” aka Iron Maiden.

4. It will be released on May 1, 2020.

5. The film isn’t a prequel after all, but will take place after Civil War when Natasha is a “fully realized woman.”

Kevin Feige describes the show as “exciting and different and strange.”

2. Tom says, “Just about the last thing that happened to him was he got Hulk smashed. So there’s a lot of pyshclogical evolution that is still yet to happen. Kevin has generously showed me what his plans are. It’s one of the most exciting creative opportunities I’ve come across. This is new territory, a new world, new challenges I can’t wait to get started.”

Hawkeye

**********

1. Jeremy Renner will return as Hawkeye. Part of the show will focus on him training the next Hawkeye, Kate Bishop.

2. Hawkeye’s time as Ronin will also be explored in the series.

3. The series will most likely draw from the Matt Fraction run of the comic series.

4. The synopsis from the supposed source material reads as follows:

“It’s Marvel’s most critically acclaimed comic in recent memory! Clint Barton, breakout star of a little Marvel movie you might have seen a while back, continues his fight for justice…and good rooftop BBQs! With Young Avenger Kate Bishop by his side, he’s out to get some downtime from being one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes…but when the apartment building he’s moved into, and the neighbors he’s befriended, are threatened by a tracksuit-wearing, dog-abusing gang of Eastern European mobsters who say “bro” an awful lot, Clint must stand up and defend his new adopted family…any way he can.”

5. The show will be available to stream on Disney+ in Fall 2021.

“That’ll be her first order of business. And then, I don’t know. It’s already been mentioned that Asgard isn’t a place but a people, so she’s got to invest in her people. And hopefully she’ll get some love and thunder.”

4. Natalie Portman will be returning as Jane Foster, and will be portraying a female Thor. Just like in Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor run! Taika Waititi had this to say about the development:

“When we were shooting Ragnarok I was reading one storyline by Jason Aaron, the Mighty Thor. And for those of you who know that storyline, it’s incredible and introduced love and thunder and for the first time, female Thor.”

Blade

*****

Before Marvel’s panel wrapped up, Kevin Feige announced that Mahershala Ali had been cast as Blade. Details other than that are not yet known.

Other projects in development include Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fantastic 4, and Mutants will be introduced at some point, though how they’ll be introduced isn’t known.

Last night the complete Phase 4 slate was revealed. In an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige had this to say, “It is the complete Phase Four the way I announced the complete Phase Three five years ago—things can move, things can change as they did if you go back and look at what we talked about five years ago for Phase Three, but we’ve been working on this for quite a while and it’s pretty set. But there are always changes possible.”

There are some empty dates remaining for the MCU including:

February 18, 2022

May 6, 2022

July 29, 2022

It’s being speculated that more announcements will come next month during D23.

What are you looking forward to most? Personally, I’m looking forward to WandaVision, Thor: Love and Thunder, Loki, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I’m also really looking forward to proper disability representation in the MCU.

That’s all. Like it wasn’t enough?! As always, I look forward to hyping up these films with my friends over on our Facebook page My Marvelous Escape.

Over and out,

Captain Stark
